Understanding Search Engine Ranking Factors

Most people hear about ranking factors in fragments: a bit of talk about backlinks here, page speed there, and the occasional argument about social signals. It is easy to lose sight of how everything fits together, especially now that semantic SEO and search intent play such a big role.

The big picture: relevance, authority and experience

At a simple level, ranking factors fall into three broad groups:

  • Relevance: How well your page matches search intent and covers the topic. Semantic SEO and solid on-page SEO live here.
  • Authority: How trustworthy and well-established your site appears. Topical authority, quality backlinks and consistent publishing all help.
  • Experience: How pleasant it is to use your site. This includes page speed, mobile friendliness and UX.

Where semantic SEO fits in

Semantic SEO strengthens your relevance signals. When search engines can clearly see that your article answers a specific question and covers related concepts properly, it has a much better chance of ranking. If you have not yet read my article on semantic SEO explained simply, that is a good starting point.

Search intent as a ranking factor

Search intent sits alongside semantic SEO. You can do everything else right, but if your content does not match the intent behind the query, it will struggle. For a deeper dive, see what is search intent, where I break down the main types and how to recognise them.

Other factors that still matter

There are dozens of smaller signals, but the ones worth worrying about for most sites are:

  • Clear on-page SEO (titles, headings, internal links, structure).
  • Fast, stable pages that work well on mobile.
  • Genuine backlinks from relevant sites.
  • Freshness for topics where recent information matters.

Do not chase every rumour. Focus on the fundamentals and build from there.

Putting it into practice

If you are just starting out, I recommend working through SEO for beginners, then reading the articles in this silo on semantic SEO, search intent and topical authority. Together, they give you a practical view of ranking factors without drowning you in theory.
